When organizing a client's pantry, the first step in my process to check the expiration dates on each and every item. Doing so ensures that 1) the food in the pantry is still good, and 2) I know exactly what items need a home.
This same process also applies to the refrigerator. I check the date on the salad dressing, ketchup and mustard, pickles, mayonnaise, and so on.
Everything has a shelf-life, and some items, like canned goods, live longer than others. But keep in mind, even canned soup expires eventually.
