One of my clients had tried and failed to organize her guest bedroom, which was blanketed in papers for her business, plus unopened mail, magazines, receipts, books, office supplies, gift bags, electronics cords and so on.
First, we sorted by broad category - paperwork, office supplies, books, then we took each category and sorted further into categories. The paperwork was sorted into piles of business papers and personal papers, then she went through personal papers and tossed 90% of the stack. Starting more broad and then narrowing it down helped my client to combat the overwhelm of the project.
